Get over yourself! Start putting yourself out thereHow to stop being your own barrier to putting yourself and your image out there and being more visible in business

If you’re comfortable with the thought of ‘putting yourself out there’ you don’t need to read on. You don’t need to get over yourself. Clearly! You’re already there. Bonus!

However, read on if you:

  • cringe at the thought of putting yourself in the spotlight
  • can’t bear the thought of ‘bragging’ about your achievements
  • hate talking about yourself to strangers
  • don’t want to share photos of yourself online (let alone video)
  • don’t want to ‘sell’ your skills and experience.

It’s time to stop sabotaging your business journey and … get over yourself!

1. Other people aren’t judging you

When people visit your website and especially your About page, they’re probably only giving it a cursory glance. They’re not memorising the details and analysing every sentence. They’re not looking at your photo or watching your video to find your flaws. You might be, but they’re not.

And that doesn’t give you permission to put together a haphazard About page – a haphazard page will deter those who want to dive a little deeper into who you are and how your business can help them.

People won’t judge you the way you harshly judge yourself. We’re our own harshest critics. Don’t I know it. I often worry how other people will perceive and judge me and it puts me off my game. If I’m off my game, I’m doing myself a big, fat disservice. I want to be me, not some poster goddess of what I think a great copywriter and business woman should be. How can I connect with the people I want to work with if I’m not being authentic? The reality, people don’t have time to judge me – I’m not that important – and neither are you.

2. Everyone struggles with their appearance

We all have something we hate about our appearance. Crooked teeth, wrinkly bits, chubby bits even from the right camera angle, inconveniently placed pimples, eyebrows that are never tame, oversized sticky-out ears – and that’s me on a good day. The list goes on and on!

We all have something we don’t like about our appearance and would like to change, but if we wait until things are perfect, we’ll be waiting forever.  Hello, Invisalign. Put yourself out there. Book a professional photographer for headshots. Do it now and don’t be kicking yourself in a year from now wishing you had done it a year ago because you know what? Those five or ten or 20 kilos are still there. People don’t want perfection – they want a real person they can connect with.

3. You will never be all things to all people

Accept that some people won’t like you. Not everyone is a good fit for you. Instead, by being your authentic self, you’ll attract the right kind of people to work with you.

What does it matter if someone who is far from being your ideal client doesn’t want to work with you? That’s a good thing. You want to deter the people you don’t want to work with and attract those you do.

4. What other people think of you is none of your business!

This old saying is very appropriate. Keep in mind the purpose of your About page. It’s to build trust and engagement with your target audience, your ideal client. You can only control your message to a certain point. What filters other people apply when they read your content is their business. As per point three, you’ll never be all things to all people so don’t even try.
